Extend the knowledge of the state of the art in computer vision in microscopic images. Identify and select the appropriate methods for the study in question. Develop the research capacity through the application of the selected methods. Exercise a critical spirit in the evaluation of the research process and the results obtained.

Experience in Computer Vision and machine learning.

Preference factors

Experience in research projects.

Maintenance stipend: € 1259,64, according to the table of monthly maintenance stipend for FCT grants , paid via bank transfer. Grant holders may be awarded potential supplements, according to a quarterly evaluation process (Articles 19, 21 and 22 of the Regulations for Grants of INESC TEC and Annex II), up to a maximum limit of 50% of the monthly maintenance stipend.

Work description

The work aims to apply coherent optical systems in submarine communication cables, leveraging phase and polarization information from transmitted signals for distributed sensing purposes. The goal is to use these techniques for the detection and monitoring of geophysical phenomena, taking advantage of the existing optical cable infrastructure as a large-scale sensor network.

Academic Qualifications

Degree in Electrical Engineering or Physical Engineering and attending a master’s degree in the same area.

Minimum profile required

Knowledge in electromagnetic waves and communications.

Experience in RF electronics and optical communications

Work description

PCB design, including unit cell test boards for waveguide environment and RIS PCB tiles. Optimisation and test of RIS control algorithms on microcontrollers. Testing of the developed PCBs, including the experimental validation of electronic circuits, and S-parameter characterization using a VNA. Experimental characterization of different RIS configurations in an anechoic chamber. Writing the scholarship activity report.

Academic Qualifications

Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering or similar area.

Minimum profile required

Experience with electronic circuit simulation tools. Experience in performing experimental measurements of electronic systems and antennas in an anechoic chamber.

Preference factors

Experience in developing algorithms for controlling the phase profile of RIS for beam-steering.
