An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 occurred late at night on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 11:43 pm local time near Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Toledo (pop. 1,200) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Neoga (pop. 1,600) 8 miles away, Mattoon (pop. 18,100) 9 miles away, Mattoon (pop. 18,100) 9 miles away, Greenup (pop. 1,500) 12 miles away, Charleston (pop. 21,200) 12 miles away, and Effingham (pop. 12,600) 21 miles away.
