EPA Highlights Air Pollution Monitoring Project in Buffalo, New York

NEW YORK (April 16, 2024) – Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia and Dr. Eun-Hye Enki Yoo, Associate Professor, University at Buffalo and Senior Pastor George F. Nicholas, Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church as well as other dignitaries gathered in Buffalo, NY to highlight a new collaborative project led by the University at Buffalo, SUNY. The university received almost $500,000 to deploy low-cost air pollution sensors at sampling sites in the residences of the underserved African American community in Buffalo. They will use this data to develop a community-specific air quality prediction model by integrating the new measurements with existing data. EPA and State of New Jersey Propose Settlement that will provide nearly $19 million for the Riverside Industrial Park Superfund Site in Newark, New Jersey

NEW YORK (April 16, 2024) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced a proposed settlement with PPG Industries, Inc. (PPG) to design and perform a $15.8 million cleanup at the Riverside Industrial Park Superfund Site on the bank of the Passaic River in Newark, New Jersey.  Under the proposed settlement, the company will also pay $2.9 million previously spent by the EPA at the Site, and EPA’s costs of overseeing PPG’s cleanup work.

In 2021, EPA finalized a cleanup plan for the Superfund site, known as a Record of Decision, that includes a combination of cleanup technologies and other measures to address contaminated soil, soil gas, groundwater, sewer water and waste at the site.

EPA Awards $1.275M to Advance Resilience in Disadvantaged Communities

BOSTON (Apr. 8, 2024) – EPA’s Southeast New England Program (SNEP) is announcing funding to improve climate resiliency in disadvantaged communities throughout Southeast New England. The SNEP Opportunity to Advance Resilience (SOAR) grant program is committed to investing at least $5 million in disadvantaged communities by 2027 with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. In this first year of the program, EPA selected five grantees across Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts, representing $1.275M in direct investment in disadvantaged communities.

“It is incredible to see the positive impacts the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to produce for our communities and neighborhoods,” said EPA New England Regional Administrator David W.
