An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred in the morning on Monday, April 21st, 2025, at 9:37 am local time near Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, France, as reported by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 15.19 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Contes (pop. 6,900) located 2 km from the epicenter, Monaco (pop. 33,000) 11 km away, Nice (pop. 342,700) 12 km away, and Menton (pop. 29,600) 15 km away. In Saint-Laurent-du-Var (pop. 29,500, 18 km away), Cagnes-sur-Mer (pop. 46,900, 21 km away), Antibes (pop. 76,400, 29 km away), and Cannes (pop. 74,500, 37 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
