Job ID: 260795
PhD student, graduate assistant
Iowa State University
2 PhD positions in modeling the interaction between phase transformations and viscoplasticity
2 PhD positions are available immediately in the Engineering Mechanics program in the Aerospace Engineering Department at Iowa State University in the Prof. Valery Levitas’ group (http://www.aere.iastate.edu/directory/?user_page=vlevitas ) to perform theoretical and computational parts of work on NSF- and ARO-funded projects on the interaction between phase transformations and viscoplasticity in various metals, ceramics, and semiconductors. Phase-field or macroscale simulations using FEM are of interest. Strong collaboration with two postdocs from the same group, who perform in situ experiments at synchrotron radiation facilities at Argonne National Laboratory, and an internship at Argonne National Laboratory are expected. MS degree is required.

A magnitude 2.7 earthquake near Yonkers, Westchester County, New York, USA, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 7.7 miles beneath the epicenter around noon on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, at 12:11 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hillsdale (pop. 10,600) located 2 miles from the epicenter, and Paterson (pop. 147,800) 7 miles away. In Yonkers (pop. 201,100, 10 miles away), Kings Bridge (pop. 75,100, 11 miles away), Washington Heights (pop. 152,600, 12 miles away), Greenburgh (pop. 86,800, 12 miles away), Fordham (pop. 94,700, 13 miles away), New York (pop. 8,804,200, 19 miles away), and Brooklyn (pop. 2,736,100, 24 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
