The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Russia near Kosh-Agach, Respublika Altay, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday, May 25th, 2025, at 9:35 am local time at a shallow depth of 14. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, and France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kuray (pop. 500) located 16 km from the epicenter, Aktash (pop. 3,400) 41 km away, and Kosh-Agach (pop. 5,700) 44 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ulagan (pop. 2,600) located 52 km from the epicenter, Tebeler (pop. 1000) 55 km away, Belyashi (pop.
