The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has extended the Air Quality Advisory through Tuesday August 5, for elevated levels of fine particulates (PM2.5). Pollutants could reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG, Orange AQI) range for all counties in the Upper Peninsula through Wednesday. The alert is in effect for all of the Upper Peninsula. Mondays forecast expressed hope that the Tuesday Advisory for wildfire smoke would be the last day of this smoke episode. That forecast will ultimately be partially true and partially false. A magnitude 2.7 earthquake near Yonkers, Westchester County, New York, USA, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 7.7 miles beneath the epicenter around noon on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, at 12:11 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hillsdale (pop. 10,600) located 2 miles from the epicenter, and Paterson (pop. 147,800) 7 miles away. In Yonkers (pop. 201,100, 10 miles away), Kings Bridge (pop. 75,100, 11 miles away), Washington Heights (pop. 152,600, 12 miles away), Greenburgh (pop. 86,800, 12 miles away), Fordham (pop. 94,700, 13 miles away), New York (pop. 8,804,200, 19 miles away), and Brooklyn (pop. 2,736,100, 24 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
