An earthquake of magnitude 2.7 occurred early morning on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, at 4:52 am local time near Zadar, Town of Zadar, Zadar County, Croatia, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.30 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 3.6, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 3.1, and The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 3.5.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jesenice (pop. 150) located 7 km from the epicenter, Starigrad (pop. 1,100) 10 km away, Posedarje (pop. 1,300) 11 km away, and Pridraga (pop. 1,300) 16 km away.
