Patchy dense fog is possible this morning causing reduction in visibility. Motorists should be alert for sudden changes in visibility this morning due to the fog. Drive at reduced speeds…watch for children at school bus stops…and use low beam headlights only. Visibility is expected to improve around 9AM this morning.

Significant magnitude 5.2 quake hits 40 km east of Hualien City, Taiwan early evening

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Hualien City, Hualien County, Taiwan, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 8.20 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Monday, May 5th, 2025, at 6:10 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 40 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yilan (pop. 94,200) located 95 km from the epicenter, Puli (pop. 86,400) 104 km away, Daxi (pop. 94,200) 128 km away,
