An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 15 minutes ago 115 km south of Jayapura, Indonesia, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 39. km beneath the epicenter near Jayapura, Kota Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia, early afternoon on Saturday, April 26th, 2025, at 3:33 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Abepura (pop. 62,200) located 108 km from the epicenter, and Jayapura (pop. 404,000) 115 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Vanimo (pop. 11,200) located 120 km from the epicenter.
