An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 10 minutes ago 62 km southeast of Ulaangom, Mongolia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km beneath the epicenter near Ulaangom, Uvs Aymag, Mongolia, in the morning on Thursday, August 28th, 2025, at 9:22 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ulaangom (pop. 30,100) located 62 km from the epicenter.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Indonesia near Kotabumi, North Lampung Regency, Lampung, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Thursday, August 28th, 2025, at 9:15 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 184. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
