A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported in the evening near Bir el Ater, Bir El Ater, Wilaya de Tebessa, Algeria.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday, August 17th, 2025, at 8:11 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.7, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 5.2, France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nefta (pop. 21,700) located 62 km from the epicenter, Ar Rudayyif (pop. 27,000) 69 km away, Bir el Ater (pop. 70,700) 78 km away,
