A magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Ternate, Kota Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia, was reported only 8 minutes ago by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 20. km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Wednesday, November 5th, 2025, at 12:58 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Galela (pop. 8,800) located 81 km from the epicenter, Tobelo (pop. 34,200) 107 km away, and Ternate (pop. 204,900) 126 km away.
