Worldwide earthquakes above magnitude 3 during the past 24 hours on 21 Aug 2025

Summary: 3 quakes 5.0+, 59 quakes 4.0+, 149 quakes 3.0+, 382 quakes 2.0+ (593 total)
Today’s seismic activity was relatively moderate but varied across regions. In Indonesia, a magnitude-4.9 quake near Bekasi rattled Jakarta and surrounding areas Wednesday night, though no damage or casualties were immediately reported (Tempo). In the United States, a 4.1-magnitude tremor struck near Fairbanks, Alaska around noon, with preliminary reports indicating little to no disruption (VolcanoDiscovery). In Russia’s Far East, a magnitude-5.2 earthquake occurred near Shikotan, Sakhalin Oblast; based on available data, no significant damage was noted (VolcanoDiscovery).
Southeast Asia also saw activity: near Yangon, Myanmar, two quake —magnitude-5.0 early evening and a 5.2-magnitude in the morning struck the West Yangon District; press coverage hasn’t detailed any damage or injuries (VolcanoDiscovery).
Additionally, minor quakes were recorded in California, including a 2.5-magnitude near Woodside and smaller tremors in Petrolia and near The Geysers, all causing no notable effects (SanLuisObispo.com, USGS).
