New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet) reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in New Zealand near Nelson, Nelson City, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at 11:31 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 52. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Havelock (pop. 590) located 25 km from the epicenter, Picton (pop. 4,900) 30 km away, Waikawa (pop. 1,600) 30 km away, Nelson (pop. 54,700) 50 km away, Stoke (pop. 19,600) 56 km away, Karori (pop. 15,400) 82 km away, Wellington (pop. 381,900) 85 km away, Porirua (pop. 62,400) 88 km away, and Lower Hutt (pop. 114,000) 94 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking
