An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 12 minutes ago 76 km southwest of Kavala, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 13.10 km beneath the epicenter near Kavala, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece, late at night on Tuesday, August 12th, 2025, at 11:29 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.3, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.7, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Karyes (pop. 240) located 9 km from the
