Just 19 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Valparaiso, Provincia de Valparaíso, Region de Valparaiso, Chile. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at 5:07 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 48. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Ligua (pop. 24,900) located 26 km from the epicenter, Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) 43 km away, Quillota (pop. 67,800) 51 km away, Vina del Mar (pop. 294,600) 61 km away, Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) 63 km away, Quilpue (pop. 130,300) 63 km away, Villa Alemana (pop. 97,300) 64 km away, and San Felipe (pop. 59,300) 79 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism,

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.8 quake in El Salvador near Acajutla, Departamento de Sonsonate, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at 3:14 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 49. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.9, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8, and The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Acajutla (pop. 22,800) located 39 km from the epicenter, Sonzacate (pop. 15,400) 59 km away, Izalco (pop. 19,200) 63 km away, Chalchuapa (pop. 32,300) 83 km away, Santa Ana (pop. 176,700) 91 km away, Santa Tecla (pop. 124,700) 96 km away, and Antiguo Cuscatlan
