Volcanic unrest has picked up again over the past month the latest monitoring data show, published in the latest monthly bulletin of the volcano observatory in Catania. In particular, a strong increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has been recorded during the past month of August:
Starting 1st of August 2025, CO2 emission values in the crater area rose brusquely from averages around 5-10,000 g/m2 per day to levels exceeding 40,000 g/m2 per day on August 18, i.e. increased by about 500%. In fact, they are the highest values detected since the beginning of the volcanic crisis in 2021.
CO2 emission levels decreased slightly at the end of the month, to around 30,000 g/m2
