Thu, 28 Aug 2025, 23:10 | BY: EARTHQUAKEMONITOR

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.8 quake in the United States near Elko, Elko County, Nevada, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Thursday, August 28th, 2025, at 3:52 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5.3 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Valmy (pop. 37) located 36 miles from the epicenter, Battle Mountain (pop. 3,600) 40 miles away, and Carlin (pop. 2,300) 46 miles away. In Elko (pop. 20,300, 55 miles away), and Winnemucca (pop. 7,900, 56 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
