A shallow magnitude 2.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Vesoul, Haute-Saône, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France.
According to the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), the quake hit on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at 5:48 am local time at a shallow depth of 14.60 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Corre (pop. 650) located 1 km from the epicenter, Jussey (pop. 1,800) 12 km away, and Bourbonne-les-Bains (pop. 2,200) 19 km away. In Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse (pop. 4,400, 21 km away), Luxeuil-les-Bains (pop. 9,200, 29 km away), Fougerolles (pop. 4,200, 30 km away), Vittel (pop. 5,700, 33 km away), Vesoul (pop. 19,900, 33 km away), and Epinal (pop. 39,500, 45 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
