Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 just reported 27 km northeast of Kiryu, Japan

Just 7 minutes ago, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Kiryu, Kiryū Shi, Gunma, Japan. The tremor was recorded around noon on Sunday, October 26th, 2025, at 12:04 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 6. km below the surface.
The event was filed by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Imaichi (pop. 64,300) located 23 km from the epicenter, Midori (pop. 50,300) 24 km away, Kanuma (pop. 94,900) 27 km away, and Kiryu (pop. 109,000) 27 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ota (pop. 224,400) located 36 km from the epicenter, Isesaki (pop. 211,900) 40 km away, Maebashi (pop. 332,100) 41 km away, Tatebayashi (pop. 81,300) 42 km away, and Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 106 km away.
