A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Denpasar, Kota Denpasar, Provinsi Bali, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Sunday, August 24th, 2025, at 3:31 pm local time at a shallow depth of 18. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Uluwatu (pop. 250) located 62 km from the epicenter, Kuta (pop. 30,000) 73 km away, Legian (pop. 10,000) 75 km away, Sanur (pop. 14,600) 79 km away, Denpasar (pop. 725,300) 81 km away, Tabanan (pop. 33,700) 94 km away, Ubud (pop. 74,800) 97 km away, and Klungkung (pop. 27,800) 97 km away.
