An earthquake of magnitude 2.6 occurred only 17 minutes ago 5 miles east of Gilroy, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2.8 miles beneath the epicenter near Gilroy, Santa Clara County, California, USA, early morning on Wednesday, November 26th, 2025, at 6:18 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.7.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gilroy (pop. 53,200) located 5 miles from the epicenter. In Hollister (pop. 37,500, 11 miles away), Morgan Hill (pop. 42,900, 13 miles away), Watsonville (pop. 53,600, 17 miles away), Prunedale (pop. 17,600, 19 miles away), Salinas (pop. 157,400, 25 miles away), Live Oak (pop. 17,200, 28 miles away), Marina (pop. 21,200, 29 miles away), and San Jose (pop. 997,400, 33 miles away), the quake

An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred early morning on Wednesday, November 26th, 2025, at 6:20 am local time near Gilroy, Santa Clara County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Gilroy (pop. 53,200) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hollister (pop. 37,500) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Morgan Hill (pop. 42,900) 13 miles away, Watsonville (pop. 53,600) 14 miles away, and Prunedale (pop. 17,600) 16 miles away.
