A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Bishkek, Gorod Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, was reported only 30 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 3.50 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Friday, September 12th, 2025, at 1:57 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lebedinovka (pop. 21,100) located 16 km from the epicenter, Kant (pop. 22,600) 17 km away, Bishkek (pop. 900,000) 19 km away, Ivanovka (pop. 17,500) 30 km away, and Korday (pop. 9,800) 32 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tokmok (pop. 71,400) located 45 km from the epicenter, Belovodskoye (pop. 23,000) 54 km away, Kara-Balta (pop. 48,300) 75 km away, and Kemin (pop. 10,400) 76 km away.
