An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 10 minutes ago 42 km southeast of Surigao, Philippines, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Surigao, Surigao del Norte, Caraga, Philippines, in the morning on Friday, August 29th, 2025, at 8:44 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Socorro (pop. 9,700) located 13 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Surigao (pop. 87,800) located 42 km from the epicenter, Cabadbaran (pop. 31,100) 67 km away, and Tandag (pop. 29,000) 73 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Butuan (pop. 309,700) located 84 km from the epicenter, Butuan (pop. 309,700) 84 km away, Libertad (pop. 250,400) 86 km away, and Buenavista (pop. 68,900)
