A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, Greece, was reported only 5 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 2.30 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, at 12:27 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Marathonas (pop. 7,200) located 20 km from the epicenter, Agia Paraskevi (pop. 59,700) 37 km away, Marousi (pop. 72,300) 38 km away, Chalandri (pop. 74,200) 39 km away, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 42 km away, Nea Ionia (pop. 67,100) 42 km away, Ilion (pop. 84,800) 47 km away, Athens (pop. 664,000) 47 km away, and Peristeri (pop. 140,000) 48 km away,
