Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Taiwan near Yongkang, Tainan, Taiwan, 31 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Thursday, August 21st, 2025, at 4:37 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 7.13 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Yujing (pop. 16,600) located 8 km from the epicenter.
In Yongkang (pop. 233,700) located 30 km from the epicenter, Chiayi City (pop. 263,200) 32 km away, Taibao (pop. 39,900) 33 km away, Tainan (pop. 771,200) 36 km away, Budai (pop. 19,300) 39 km away, and Beigang (pop. 33,300) 46 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in
