An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred in the evening on Thursday, August 28th, 2025, at 9:53 pm local time near Pozzuoli, Naples, Campania, Italy, as reported by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pozzuoli (pop. 81,200) located 1 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bacoli (pop. 25,600) located 4 km from the epicenter, Bacoli (pop. 25,600) 4 km away, Monterusciello (pop. 29,100) 4 km away, Quarto (pop. 37,700) 7 km away, and Pianura (pop. 57,800) 7 km
