An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred 38 minutes ago 40 km southeast of Chiayi City, Taiwan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 8. km beneath the epicenter near Chiayi City, Chiayi, Taiwan, late at night on Thursday, December 11th, 2025, at 10:49 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Yujing (pop. 16,600) located 21 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Xinying (pop. 75,000) located 38 km from the epicenter, Chiayi City (pop. 263,200) 40 km away, Yongkang (pop. 233,700) 45 km away, Taibao (pop. 38,700) 46 km away, Tainan (pop. 1,856,600) 50 km away, Fengshan (pop. 356,500) 69

The Francis College of Engineering (FCOE) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is searching for outstanding candidates for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biomedical Engineering.  The position is anticipated to begin in September 2026.

UMass Lowell’s Department of Biomedical Engineering trains students to translate discoveries into real-world applications in the medical device and biotechnology industries through an ABET-accredited B.S. program—Massachusetts’ first at a public university—with specialized tracks in medical device development, cell and tissue engineering, and biomechanics. Students can accelerate their education with a 4+1 B.S.–to–M.S. option and pursue advanced studies via the intercampus Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology (BMEBT) M.S./Ph.D. or the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, all enhanced by hands-on research in cutting-edge labs and core facilities. Our collaborative research is funded by NSF, NIH, DoD, and industry partners, fostering a culture of innovation and scholarship. The department maintains strong
