Just 16 minutes ago, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Miyako, Miyako Shi, Iwate, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Monday, November 10th, 2025, at 5:23 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 20. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Miyako (pop. 51,200) located 124 km from the epicenter, and Kamaishi (pop. 43,100) 135 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred late at night on Sunday, November 9th, 2025, at 10:23 pm local time near Eureka Roadhouse, Matanuska-Susitna, Alaska, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 110 miles. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Eureka Roadhouse (pop. 29, 30 miles away), and Sutton-Alpine (pop. 1,400, 52 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
