A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Pagar Alam, Lahat Regency, Sumatera Selatan, Indonesia, was reported only 8 minutes ago by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 31. km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025, at 5:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pagar Alam (pop. 70,400) located 85 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bengkulu (pop. 373,600) located 107 km from the epicenter, and Bengkulu (pop. 373,600) 107 km away.
