The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Ethiopia near Debre Birhan, Amhara, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday, October 26th, 2025, at 8:24 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Debre Sina (pop. 9,400) located 27 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Debre Birhan (pop. 146,900) located 37 km from the epicenter, Robit (pop. 39,600) 41 km away, Abomsa (pop. 30,400) 41 km away, Kobo (pop. 56,100) 44 km away, Mehal Meda (pop. 24,900) 79 km away, and At’aye (pop. 26,300) 80 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow
