An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 8 minutes ago 55 km north of Jayapura, Indonesia, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Jayapura, Kota Jayapura, Provinsi Papua, Indonesia, early evening on Friday, August 29th, 2025, at 7:16 pm local time. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jayapura (pop. 404,000) located 55 km from the epicenter, and Abepura (pop. 62,200) 62 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Vanimo (pop. 11,200) located 98 km from the epicenter.
