An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred in the morning on Thursday, December 18th, 2025, at 11:22 am local time near Wonosari, Gunung Kidul Regency, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pundong (pop. 24,100) located 91 km from the epicenter, Bambanglipuro (pop. 44,700) 91 km away, Srandakan (pop. 29,500) 93 km away, Wonosari (pop. 87,500) 95 km away, Pandak (pop. 56,000) 95 km away, Bantul (pop. 64,400) 98 km away, Sewon (pop. 73,600) 100 km away, and Yogyakarta (pop. 373,600) 108 km away.
