A magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA, was reported only 2 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Sunday, December 14th, 2025, at 3:30 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Glen Ellen (pop. 780) located 4 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rohnert Park (pop. 42,400) located 6 miles from the epicenter, Agua Caliente (pop. 27,100) 6 miles away, Santa Rosa (pop. 178,100) 8 miles away, Petaluma (pop. 60,400) 10 miles away, Napa (pop. 80,400) 17 miles away, and Novato (pop. 55,500) 18 miles away.

Rohnert Park (29.8 km S of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / complex motion difficult to describe / 10-15 s : I was sitting at my piano. At first I thought it was the upstairs neighbors stepping hard. But then the vertical blinds swayed and I could hear rhythmic creaking and felt kind of like being on a boat. I got up and said oh no, it’s an earthquake. Then it stopped. But then I thought I felt another shorter one just a couple of minutes ago, about 3:40. | 2 users found this interesting.

Rohnert Park (9.5 km WSW of epicenter) [Map] / Light shaking (MMI IV) / vibration and rolling / 10-15 s : The shaking was the strongest I have felt in years, but I stayed on the couch and didn’t run to a doorway, as I have done immediately with earthquakes like Lima Prieta. No fear or panic. | One user found this interesting.
