An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred in the morning on Thursday, August 21st, 2025, at 8:58 am local time near Yangon, West Yangon District, Myanmar (Burma), as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Thongwa (pop. 52,500) located 66 km from the epicenter, Syriam (pop. 69,400) 77 km away, Kayan (pop. 40,300) 82 km away, Yangon (pop. 4,477,600) 86 km away, Kanbe (pop. 58,100) 88 km away, Twante (pop. 46,500) 94 km away, Kyaiklat (pop. 52,400) 99 km away, and Mawlamyine (pop. 438,900) 114 km away.
