The Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics (APAM) at Columbia University in the City of New York invites applications for Associate Research Scientist positions in the area of magnetically confined plasma research.

The successful candidate will advance research in magnetically confined plasmas and support the broader goals of the Columbia Fusion Research Center. In the tokamak area, the candidate may conduct research on experimental tokamak facilities in the public sector. Examples include the DIII-D tokamak located at General Atomics or the National Spherical Torus Experiment Upgrade located at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, or tokamaks located abroad. In the stellarator area, the candidate may conduct research in coil optimization, energetic particle physics, and other related activities. Activities may also be conducted in support of industrially sponsored research contracts originating from a wide array of sponsors, including concepts beyond tokamaks and stellarators. The successful candidate

Tue, 28 Oct 2025, 13:28 | BY: EARTHQUAKEMONITOR

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.8 quake in the United States near Mammoth, Park County, Wyoming, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Tuesday, October 28th, 2025, at 7:22 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0.7 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mammoth (pop. 260) located 14 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include West Yellowstone (pop. 1,300) located 16 miles from the epicenter, Gardiner (pop. 880) 17 miles away, and Big Sky (pop. 2,300) 42 miles away. In Ashton (pop. 1,100, 59 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

If you felt it, report it through our site or app right
