Just 39 minutes ago, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck near San Jose, San José, Provincia de San Jose, Costa Rica. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Saturday, August 30th, 2025, at 8:30 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 6. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tres Rios (pop. 10,400) located 7 km from the epicenter, Ipis (pop. 26,700) 8 km away, Cartago (pop. 26,600) 9 km away, Purral (pop. 30,000) 10 km away, and Curridabat (pop. 34,600) 11 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Vicente (pop. 34,400) located 12 km from the epicenter, San Vicente (pop. 34,400) 12 km away, San Jose (pop. 335,000) 16 km away, Heredia (pop. 21,900) 20 km away, and San Francisco (pop. 55,900) 21 km away.
