An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 17 minutes ago 109 km southwest of Kimbe, Papua New Guinea, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 129.16 km beneath the epicenter near Kimbe, Talasea District, West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, in the morning on Wednesday, November 26th, 2025, at 10:07 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kandrian (pop. 1000) located 60 km from the epicenter, and Kimbe (pop. 18,800) 109 km away.
