Just 9 minutes ago, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Hihifo, Niuas, Tonga. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Friday, November 28th, 2025, at 4:30 pm local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 258. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hihifo (pop. 300) located 124 km from the epicenter.
