Just 21 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Yongkang, Tainan, Taiwan. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Friday, August 22nd, 2025, at 2:06 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0, and Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 4.6.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Yujing (pop. 16,600) located 7 km from the epicenter.
In Yongkang (pop. 233,700) located 19 km from the epicenter, Tainan (pop. 771,200) 25 km away, Budai (pop. 19,300) 36 km away,

Worldwide earthquakes above magnitude 3 during the past 24 hours on 22 Aug 2025
Summary: 1 quake 7.0+, 9 quakes 5.0+, 46 quakes 4.0+, 165 quakes 3.0+, 393 quakes 2.0+ (614 total)
A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Drake Passage—between South America and Antarctica—early today, triggering a tsunami alert for parts of Chile’s coastline. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of possible waves within three hours, and authorities remain on alert (Economic Times).
Meanwhile, aggregated data show a particularly active seismic day, with at least one quake above M7, around five above M5, and dozens more in the moderate range. According to VolcanoDiscovery, more than 1,800 earthquakes were detected in the past 24 hours, underscoring the global scale of seismic activity.
Other noteworthy tremors included a M5.3 near Mawlaik, Myanmar, and several magnitude-5 events in the South Shetland Islands region. While these quakes drew scientific attention, no major damage or casualties have been reported.
Despite the high numbers, today’s seismic activity was otherwise geographically dispersed and largely non-impactful—save for the Drake Passage and tsunami advisory, which remains the most significant event of the day.
This report is being updated every hour.
