An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred late at night on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025, at 11:33 pm local time near Xudat, Khachmaz Rayon, Azerbaijan, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 11. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Izberbash (pop. 42,100) located 26 km from the epicenter.
In Dagestanskiye Ogni (pop. 27,800) located 50 km from the epicenter, Derbent (pop. 106,000) 56 km away, Kaspiysk (pop. 81,800) 58 km away, Makhachkala (pop. 596,400) 73 km away, and Buynaksk (pop. 62,700) 92 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Xudat (pop. 13,600) located
