An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 8 minutes ago 55 km north of Jayapura, Indonesia, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Jayapura, Kota Jayapura, Provinsi Papua, Indonesia, early evening on Friday, August 29th, 2025, at 7:16 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jayapura (pop. 404,000) located 55 km from the epicenter, and Abepura (pop. 62,200) 62 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Vanimo (pop. 11,200) located 98 km from the epicenter.

At 419 AM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 5 miles southwest of Forder, or 44 miles south of Limon, moving southeast at 20 mph. HAZARD…Wind gusts up to 50 mph and half inch size hail. SOURCE…Radar indicated. IMPACT…Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include… Forder, Karval and Wild Horse Point.
