A very shallow magnitude 2.8 earthquake was reported around noon near Montpellier, Hérault, Occitanie, France.
According to France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the quake hit on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, at 12:19 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palavas-les-Flots (pop. 6,100) located 15 km from the epicenter, Frontignan (pop. 22,300) 19 km away, and Lattes (pop. 17,400) 20 km away. In Sete (pop. 40,700, 23 km away), Mauguio (pop. 18,300, 24 km away), Montpellier (pop. 248,300, 25 km away), Castelnau-le-Lez (pop. 18,000, 27 km away), Lunel (pop. 26,600, 33 km away), and Agde (pop. 23,000, 42 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
