A moderately shallow magnitude 5.4 earthquake was reported in the morning near Minami-Soma, Minamisōma Shi, Fukushima, Japan.
According to Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Tuesday, October 7th, 2025, at 9:30 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 51. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Minami-Soma (pop. 59,000) located 39 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Soma (pop. 34,900) located 51 km from the epicenter, Iwaki (pop. 357,300) 70 km away, Date (pop. 59,600) 86 km away, Fukushima (pop. 294,200) 86 km away, Fukushima (pop. 294,200) 86 km away, Koriyama (pop. 327,700) 91 km away, and Sukagawa (pop. 75,000) 94 km away.
