Ethiopia was shaken near Wik’ro, Tigray, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 only 9 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Wik’ro, Tigray, Ethiopia, early evening on Saturday, October 11th, 2025, at 7:18 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Shaguby (pop. 500) located 14 km from the epicenter.
In Wik’ro (pop. 64,000) located 23 km from the epicenter, Dolo (pop. 41,400) 38 km away, Idaga Hamus (pop. 25,400) 51 km away, and Adigrat (pop. 121,800) 66 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Arerti (pop. 23,000) located 94 km
