Just 8 minutes ago, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Shahrud, Semnan Province, Iran. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Friday, July 18th, 2025, at 7:46 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Shahrud (pop. 131,900) located 9 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Azadshahr (pop. 47,600) located 71 km from the epicenter, Damghan (pop. 67,700) 72 km away, and Gonbad-e Kavus (pop. 131,400) 89 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bandar-e Torkaman (pop. 54,000) located 102 km from the epicenter.
