A shallow magnitude 2.6 earthquake was reported in the morning near Gawler, South Australia, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Sunday, July 27th, 2025, at 10:08 am local time at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.6 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Koonunga (pop. 49) located 1 miles from the epicenter, Nuriootpa (pop. 6,200) 6 miles away, Kapunda (pop. 2,900) 6 miles away, and Greenock (pop. 1,100) 7 miles away. In Angaston (pop. 2,100, 8 miles away), Tanunda (pop. 4,500, 10 miles away), Freeling (pop. 2,200, 12 miles away), and Gawler (pop. 20,000, 21 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

A very shallow magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported in the morning near Merredin, Western Australia, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Sunday, July 27th, 2025, at 9:04 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In South Yelbeni (pop. 29) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in South Trayning (pop. 42) located 7 miles from the epicenter, Korrelocking (pop. 50) 15 miles away, and North Tammin (pop. 120) 17 miles away.
