Mon, 28 Jul 2025, 06:49 | BY: EARTHQUAKEMONITOR

A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Masbate, Bicol, Philippines.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake hit on Monday, July 28th, 2025, at 2:35 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In San Jacinto (pop. 7,600) located 12 km from the epicenter, and Masbate (pop. 47,500) 17 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bulan (pop. 28,500) located 31 km from the epicenter, Irosin (pop. 20,700) 47 km away, Sorsogon (pop. 82,700) 63 km away, Legaspi (pop. 179,500) 70 km away, Oas (pop. 66,100) 84 km away, and Polangui (pop. 77,100) 87 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other
