Greece was shaken near Palekastro, Lasithi, Crete, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 5 minutes ago, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Palekastro, Lasithi, Crete, Greece, in the evening on Monday, July 7th, 2025, at 8:46 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.9, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 5.1.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many
